When I was 20 years old, I was blindsided by a diagnosis that would shape both my personal journey and my professional calling—Bell’s Palsy. It started suddenly: the drooping on one side of my face, difficulty speaking, eating, and smiling, and the overwhelming fear of not knowing if or when it would go away. What was even harder was how long it lasted—nearly two years.

During that time, I was put on round after round of antibiotics and steroids. I felt miserable—physically and emotionally. On top of the Bell’s Palsy, I began experiencing debilitating migraines that no one could explain. I spent time in the hospital and saw multiple specialists, but no one could tell me why my symptoms kept flaring or why my recovery was so slow. My gut health was a wreck from all the medications, and I felt like I was losing hope.

That’s when I tried acupuncture for the first time. I was living in Tampa, and honestly—I was just desperate for anything that might help. What I didn’t expect was how profoundly acupuncture would change my life. Not only did it bring real, noticeable relief to my facial paralysis and pain, but it also helped with my migraines, mood, and digestion. It was the only thing that made a lasting difference—and it was that experience that ultimately led me to become a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.

How Acupuncture Helps Bell’s Palsy

Bell’s Palsy is a condition where the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) becomes inflamed, leading to weakness or paralysis of the facial muscles, usually on one side. While the exact cause can vary—from viral infections to immune reactions—the effects are often frightening and frustrating.

Acupuncture works by:

  • Reducing inflammation and swelling of the facial nerve

  • Stimulating nerve regeneration and circulation to the affected muscles

  • Releasing tight muscles that compensate during paralysis

  • Regulating the immune system and calming the nervous system

  • Supporting whole-body healing, especially when paired with herbal medicine and gut support

Our Approach: More Than Just Needles

In my practice, we use a comprehensive approach to support Bell’s Palsy recovery. This often includes:

  • Electro-acupuncture: We gently apply a mild current to specific acupuncture points to stimulate facial nerve repair and improve muscle tone.

  • Herbal medicine: Custom formulas are used to reduce inflammation, promote nerve healing, and support overall vitality.

  • Cupping & Gua Sha: These techniques help improve circulation and reduce tension around the neck, jaw, and face—areas often affected by Bell’s Palsy.

  • Nutritional & gut health support: If you’ve been on medications like antibiotics or steroids (as I was), we’ll work on restoring gut function and the microbiome to support immune and neurological recovery.

The Sooner You Start, the Better

Bell’s Palsy is one of those conditions where early treatment makes a huge difference. I always encourage patients (and their loved ones) to start acupuncture as soon as possible—ideally within the first few days to weeks of onset. However, even if it’s been months or years, we can still make meaningful progress, especially with a consistent and customized treatment plan.

A Message from Someone Who's Been There

I know firsthand how scary and isolating Bell’s Palsy can feel. It changed the course of my life—but it also gave me a purpose. I’ve now had the privilege of helping numerous patients recover from Bell’s Palsy, and I truly believe acupuncture is one of the most effective and empowering treatments available.

If you or someone you know is dealing with Bell’s Palsy, please don’t wait. Book a consultation, reach out with questions, or simply share this blog. It’s important people know they’re not alone—and that there is help available.

Expect to need several sessions, especially in the beginning. Healing the nerve and rebalancing the system takes time, but with the right support, it is absolutely possible.

Warmly,
